United Nations Volunteers provides input to strengthnening capacity of civil society organizations in HIV response in Rwanda

The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UN AIDS) country office in Rwanda, in the framework of its work to reinforce Civil Society response against HIV-AIDS, brought to Rwanda four Spanish volunteers to support the national Umbrellas ‘NGO Forum on HIV-AIDS’, ‘Faith-based Organisations Network against HIV-AIDS’ (RCLS), and ‘Network of People living with HIV-AIDS’ (RRP+).

The Partnership Adviser at UNAIDS country office Mr Dieudonné RUTURWA provided strong support to mobilise this technical support through the United Nations University Volunteers Programme, and managed to bring them to strengthen capacity of civil society organizations for a period of six months.

Since their arrival in October 2008, the four Spanish Volunteers; Ms. Cristina Barreda & Ms. Lucía Lois (NGO Forum), Ms. María Paz Ortega (RCLS), and Ms. Mariam Berchid (RRP+), have developed many different projects; such as the creation of a database of the activities of their member organisations; the writing of projects and search of calls of proposals for mobilization of resources; the support of the implementation and coordination of their organisations plans, the construction of websites,

the organisation of trainings on database and website software for their staff, the documentation of Good Practices of their member’s activities, the writing of analysis reports, and the collaboration with Civil Society in the integration of their Work Strategic Plans into the national level.

The three civil society Umbrellas and the four UN Volunteers have expressed their satisfaction with the stage work and thank UNAIDS for their support, expecting that this kind of experience become an example for the future.

Mr Dieudonné RUTURWA, reiterated his satisfaction in following words: “A meaningful participation of civil society organizations – networks in HIV response is among core priorities and constitute key pillar to achieving commitments for Universal access – and comprehensive intervention for HIV prevention, treatment care and support (---) Such technical support in the area of capacity, leadership and organisational development is to be sustained for the ultimate goal of scaling up HIV response to reach out un reached targets”.
