Support was also provided to NEC to build ICT capacity, another area of critical importance, especially on elections day. The NEC strengthened its capacity both by improving the ICT and communications infrastructure of the organization, and by hiring consultants to aid with implementation and training of staff on its effective use. 41 desktop computers were purchased for the Commission in 2008. UNDP also supported particularly the civil society platform in elections observations with the deployment of 100 Long Term observers and 1,800 Short Term observers. The platform could implement effective domestic monitoring activities.
In addition, effective assistance was provided in trainings and civic education programmes, training for electoral agents. Six training sessions were also organized for Short Term observers
