Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Rwanda

UN Volunteers support the MDG campaign in Rwanda: Youth from Secondary schools participate in a drawing competition on MDG.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) in collaboration with the Young Women's Christian Association of Rwanda (YWCA) has awarded the best students for excelling in portraying the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in a drawing competition.

The competition was organized within the context of UNV/MDGs sensitization project in the Great Lakes Region to promote the MDGs to the students themselves but also to the public in General. The results of the competition revealed that the message of the Millennium Goals has reached different parts of the country and different members of the Rwandan community.

Irashimwa Olivier-Sauveur of Petit Seminaire-St. Leo, aged 20, was won the best prizes in the competition. Out of 63 students that participated, 13 were given prizes including cash and school materials worth over 1.4 million.

In order to disseminate the messages on the MDG to a wider audience through the drawings, the best images were used by the UN in Rwanda for communication purposes (the 2008 calendars, the RC New Year cards, etc.) which were distributed to various stakeholders including government, donors, Civil Society and Private Sector.

The MDGs responds to the world's main development challenges and to the calls of civil society. They include Eradication of extreme poverty; achieving universal primary education; promoting gender equality & empowering women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combating AIDS and other diseases; ensuring environmental sustainability and developing a global partnership for development.
