What UNDP in Rwanda is doing to meet the Millennium Development Goals
MDG support has been a rapidly-growing area of UNDP's work both globally and at the country level, particularly since the Millennium Summit of 2005. The following activities form a large part of Rwanda 's work towards the MDGs:
A Needs Assessment has been carried out with the EDPRS (Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy - stage II of Rwanda 's PRSP process) to determine the costs of achieving the MDGs in Rwanda.
Capacity Development Mapping is carried out in partnership with HIDA (the Human Resources and Institutional Capacity Development Agency working under Rwanda's Ministry for Public Services and Labour) to identify absorption capacity bottlenecks in order to ensure that the additional funds mobilized to achieve the MDGs in Rwanda can be put to optimal use.
The second Millennium Development Goals report released in November 2007 recapitulates human development and poverty reduction as the overall development goals for the country. It sets out the national progress in achieving the MDGs based on national targets tailored to Rwanda 's development circumstances.
DevInfo is a new initiative which will monitor MDG progress and provide a range of statistics about key MDG indicators.
UNDP Rwanda acts as the administrative anchor for the Millennium Villages project, in Mayange village. Under this initiative, Mayange has been developed with a view to achieving all the MDGs as rapidly and as effectively as possible. The thinking behind this project is to approach development from a 'bottom up' perspective as opposed to the accepted and widespread 'top down' perspective. It is hoped that Mayange's new schools and hospitals, high levels of sanitation and vaccination, increased output of crops and consequent creation of new markets and businesses, will provide a beacon and a benchmark for other communities. Futhermore, the Millennium village will serve as example to other rural sectors in what is commonly known as “Vision 2020 Umurenge”, a programme meant to bring about rapid realization of the development objectives in the 30 poorest sectors (administrative units) across the country.
