The Global Environment Facility (GEF)/ Small Grants Programme (SGP)

Background

The Small Grants Program (SGP) is a Global Environment Facility (GEF) program implanted by UNDP and executed by UNOPS in 101 developing countries since 1992. Its mission is to insure global environmental benefits in the areas of biodiversity conservation climate change mitigation/adaptation, protection of international waters, reduction of land degradation and POP pollution, throughout community-based approaches. The rationale of the program is rooted in the belief that local solutions to global environmental problems exist. Therefore, GEF/SGP funds innovative projects initiated by local Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) or Community Based Organizations (CBOs), (for a maximum of 50, 000 USD per project) to be replicated at larger scale by other partners.
In Rwanda , the program was launched in June 2004 but became fully operational since March 2005. 25 projects have been funded so far: 11 are completed and 14 are ongoing. The total amount awarded for those projects is 1, 237, 837 USD
